Dolphin swimming practice
|
About pre-practice |
The sea where the dolphins live is located around Mikurajima, which has no large bays or inlets. We try to enjoy swimming in the shade of the island as much as possible, but there may still be strong waves and winds. To make dolphin swimming safer and more enjoyable, we recommend practicing beforehand. The more smoothly you can swim and dive, the more likely you will be to encounter dolphins. Also, if you swim with us beforehand, we will be able to guide you with peace of mind. |
Local Rules |
As this is an open ocean activity, you will need some swimming ability. If this is your first time participating in dolphin swimming on Miyakejima, you will need to undergo training. |
Practice content |
"It took me a year to take a decent photo of a dolphin ^^; Practice
is important!" (Staff N) |
Fitting |
How to use the equipment |
How to Enter |
|
|
|
Make sure your equipment fits properly and works properly. |
You will explain how to properly attach and use your diving equipment.
If you attach it incorrectly, you may drop it into the ocean. |
You practice entering the water from the boat. Of course, if you can enter
the water smoothly, your chances of encountering dolphins will increase. |
Try floating |
How to use equipment on the surface |
How to dive |
|
|
|
You will experience the buoyancy of a wetsuit. If you are a beginner, this
will give you a sense of security. |
You practice what to do if water gets into your snorkel or mask, and how
to flap your feet using your fins.
If you don't practice this perfectly in a calm place, it will be quite difficult in the ocean at Mikura. |
A smooth dive will get you closer to the dolphins and allow you to hold your breath longer. A rough dive will create bubbles around you and prevent others from seeing the dolphins. |
How to swim underwater |
How to play with dolphins |
Eye contact with dolphins |
|
|
|
Even if you dive, you won't be able to enjoy playing with the dolphins
to your heart's content unless you can freely adjust the depth and direction.
This is quite difficult. |
Dolphins also love to have fun, so they will often join you if invited, and it's not uncommon for their plans to suddenly change just as they are passing people. |
Once you've improved this much, you'll be able to see the dolphin's face
from the front. It's a little scary, but the dolphin will come towards
you and peer down at you. You'll also feel the thrill of making eye contact
with it. |
